Breastfeeding process in mothers with children with cleft lip and palate in Chile in 2023

Abstract

Introduction: Cleft lip and palate affect vital functions such as feeding, hearing, and breathing. In Chile, the incidence of this condition is 1 in every 700 newborns. Babies with clefts have difficulties generating suction due to the communication between the oral and nasal cavities. Breastfeeding in newborns with cleft lip and palate is an under-researched area due to the challenges associated with this craniofacial malformation. Although efforts are being made to guide mothers in supporting breastfeeding, it is necessary to delve deeper into how they are being assisted. Objective: To understand the breastfeeding process in mothers with children with cleft lip and palate in Chile during 2023. Methodology: A qualitative research approach was implemented, utilizing the case study method. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews. Result: Mothers highlighted difficulties in suction and latch. Some managed to establish indirect breastfeeding using support devices and professional guidance, while others adopted mixed methods or formula feeding. Discussion: Specialized support was key to overcoming challenges, emphasizing the importance of early interventions and advisory programs in hospitals and communities. Conclusion: The study underscores the importance of professional support to improve breastfeeding success rates in these children, proposing the need for more resources and training for healthcare staff.
