Use of social media as a tool for disseminating information on accident prevention in swimming pools and basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation concepts in children under 14 years of age at CESFAM Santiago Nueva Extremadura

Abstract

The CESFAM Santiago Nueva Extremadura provides services to a community with high social vulnerability. In summer, drowning in swimming pools is one of the main preventable accidents among minors. Methodology: Given the widespread use of social media, two educational videos on primary and secondary prevention of swimming pool accidents were developed and disseminated through CESFAM's social media channels. A poster with a QR code linking to both videos was also designed, along with a survey, which was distributed within the establishment with the aim of evaluating the use of social media as a source of information to educate the population through the provision of audiovisual material. Results: Both videos were viewed by more than 100 people. It is noteworthy that most people did not know how to deal with a drowning and that the videos can be a useful tool for prevention. Discussion: Social media is a tool that allows for the dissemination of information and can be used by CESFAMs, given its low cost of use, its ability to reach a large number of people, and its ability to promote participation in terms of health. Its major limitation is mistrust. Conclusion: The use of audiovisual material published on social media is an easy method to apply and understand for the population of the La Pintana Commune in terms of health prevention. This material should be disseminated so that the population can benefit from this tool.
