Abstract

Introduction: Cervical cancer is the eighth most common cancer worldwide and the second most frequent among women. It is entirely preventable, as its primary cause is infection with the human papillomavirus. Objective: This review aims to analyse the behaviour of cervical cancer internationally, considering its incidence, prevalence, and mortality. Methodology: A descriptive observational study was conducted using secondary data from GLOBOCAN and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation regarding mortality rates, disability-adjusted life years, and hospital discharges. Data from 2002 to 2023 were analyzed. Result: In 2022, cervical cancer was ranked 8th in global incidence, with Latin America and the Caribbean being the region with the highest incidence rate, and 9th in cancers with the highest mortality, with Africa being the region with the highest rate. According to data from 2017-2019, approximately 3,1% of women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer at some point in their lives, with a 5-year relative survival rate of 80,8% between 2014 and 2020. Conclusion: Cervical cancer remains a significant global public health issue despite the availability of effective prevention tools. Unequal access to these strategies perpetuates substantial disparities between regions and population groups, highlighting the need to strengthen equitable access to public health policies.
