Abstract

During his pontificate, Francis tried to modify the Church’s traditional teaching on the death penalty. According to the traditional teaching, the death penalty is licit in principle. Francis, however, affirmed that it is inadmissible, and ordered a new formulation of the Catechism on the subject to be made. In this paper, we set out what the Pope taught on the death penalty, the reasons he gave for its supposed unlawfulness, and we subject these reasons to critical evaluation. We conclude that none of the reasons given by the Pope are convincing, so that a Catholic must adhere to the traditional doctrine on the licitness of the death penalty.
