Abstract

Umbilical hernia is a protrusion of the parietal peritoneum by the rectus abdominis muscles at the level of the umbilicus. Objective: To describe the rate of hospital discharge due to umbilical hernia between 2019-2022 in Chile. Methodology: Descriptive ecological study. Data obtained from the Department of Statistics and Health Research on hospital discharges for umbilical hernia in Chile between 2019-2022, according to sex and age group. The hospital discharge rate was calculated. No ethics committee was required. Results: The hospital discharge rate was 36,54/100.000 inhabitants. The 2022 was the peak with 45,35. The male sex had the highest rate with 40,16/100.000 inhabitants. The 45-64 age group had 8.217 hospital discharges being the highest.  Discussion: In 2020 there was a decrease from 2019 in the hospital discharge rate. Subsequently, there was an increase in the hospital discharge rate with a peak in 2022, possibly due to the increase in sedentary lifestyles and obesity in the pandemic. Men presented the highest hospital discharge rate, this could be due to greater comorbidities associated with the development of abdominal hernias, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia. Women between 20-44 years of age presented more hospital discharges than men, which could be explained by the higher frequency of pregnancies in this age range. Conclusion: The hospital discharge rate was higher among 45-64 year olds and the male sex was the most affected. This demonstrates the need for further research related to abdominal wall hernias in Chile, given their high frequency and high recurrence.
