Abstract

Introduction: The Guillain-Barré Syndrome is the most common form of flaccid paralysis, new causes have been described and there are no updated data in Chile. Objective: To estimate the rate of hospital discharges for Guillain-Barré Syndrome in men and women aged 1-80 years during 2020-2023 in Chile. Methodology: Ecological observational design. Hospital discharges due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome were studied, according to age and sex between 2020-2023, data from the DEIS, of the Chilean Ministry of Health. Due to the origin of the data, an Ethics Committee was not needed. Results: 2022 was the year with the highest rate of hospital discharges, with 3,60 per 100.000 inhabitants. Regarding sex, men represented the highest rate of hospital discharges with an average of 3,73. The age group that predominates in the period is 65 to 79 years with a rate of 5,73. Discussion: The highest rate of hospital discharges occurred between 2022-2023 due to a possible increase in bed availability after the pandemic and secondary to SARS-COV 2 infection. The rate of hospital discharges throughout the study years was higher in men, which could be due to the fact that Campylobacter Jejuni is more prevalent in men. The highest rate of hospital discharges according to age range was between 65 and 79 years, possibly due to a higher prevalence of other comorbidities that weaken the immune status. Conclusion: Knowing this information could help improve the planning of resources and services at the national level aimed at the highest risk groups.
