Update on hospital discharge rate for meniscus tear in chile between 2020-2023

Abstract

Introduction: Meniscus tears are a highly prevalent trauma pathology worldwide. In Chile, the incidence of meniscal procedures has an increasing trend. Objective: To describe the hospital discharge rate due to meniscus tears during the period 2020 to 2023 in Chile. Methodology: This observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and ecological study was carried out using data from the Department of Statistics and Health Information and the National Institute of Statistics. Microsoft 365 Excel® was used for descriptive analysis. Result: The year 2022 had the highest hospital discharge rate with 31,15/100.000 inhabitants. The male sex predominated with a hospital discharge rate of 34,66/100.000. The most affected age group was the group from 45 to 64 years old with a hospital discharge rate of 44,89/100.000 inhabitants. An average of 1,11 days of hospitalization was obtained. Discussion: The higher hospital discharge rate observed in 2022 can be explained by the effects of the reorganization of beds following the health alert in relation to COVID-19. The male sex showed greater rate, in accordance with international literature. The greater hospital discharge rate observed in the age group of 45 to 64 years can be attributed to overexertion at work associated with chronic wear of the joint. Conclusion: the male sex and the age group from 45 to 64 years stand out for their hospital discharge rate, which emphasizes the implementation of prevention measures with the aim of reducing the hospital burden of this pathology.
