Introduction: An umbilical hernia is the protrusion of the parietal peritoneum through a defect in the abdominal wall at the level of the umbilicus. Objective: To determine the hospital discharge rate due to umbilical hernia in Chile between 2020 and 2023. Methodology: Observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. Data from the Department of Statistics and Health Information on hospital discharges due to umbilical hernia were used, categorized by sex and age group. The hospital discharge rate was calculated. Ethical approval was not required. Result: The overall hospital discharge rate was 29,46 per 100.000 inhabitants. Males showed the highest rate (32,54 per 100.000). The most affected age group was 65-79 years (52,92 per 100.000). Discussion: The lowest rate was recorded in 2020, possibly due to resource prioritization during the pandemic. From 2021, discharge rates increased, peaking in 2022. This may relate to the resumption of elective surgeries and the gradual normalization of hospital services. Men presented higher rates, possibly due to increased intra-abdominal pressure or visceral fat accumulation. The higher incidence in the 65-79 age group may be linked to comorbidities such as ascites, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and obesity. The average hospital stay was 1,87 days, possibly due to case prioritization and optimized post-pandemic protocols. Conclusion: Hospital discharge rates rose from 2021, peaking in 2022. This underscores the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to reduce complications and improve public health policies in Chile regarding umbilical hernias.
