Abstract

Introduction: With the development of new diagnostic techniques, such as polymerase chain reaction, the diagnosis of genital tract infections in pregnant women caused by bacteria of the genus Ureaplasma spp has changed, creating a more uncertain picture of the association between these infections and maternal and foetal outcomes. Objective: To identify the obstetric outcomes associated with infection by Ureaplasma parvum and/or Ureaplasma urealyticum, in order to guide the need for treatment. Methodology: A search was conducted for articles published in Pubmed, Epistemonikos and Scielo between 2013 and 2023. Results and Discussion: There is evidence of an association between infection with Ureaplasma urealyticum and/or Ureaplasma parvum and premature birth, low birth weight, premature rupture of membranes, spontaneous abortion, neonatal and perinatal death, and chorioamnionitis. Conclusion: The available information shows the relationship between infection with Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum and various obstetric outcomes.
