Melanoma is a potentially fatal type of skin cancer that is steadily increasing worldwide. Currently, there are no recent studies showing the epidemiological reality of this pathology in hospitals in Chile. Objective: To calculate the hospital discharge rate and identify the year, sex, and age group with the highest hospital discharge rate for malignant skin melanoma from 2018 to 2021 in Chile. Methodology: Observational and descriptive study using data on hospital discharges in Chile from 2018 to 2021, considering the variables of sex, age group, and year. Descriptive statistics and hospital discharge rate calculations were applied. Results: Hospital discharge rate for malignant melanoma of 4.81 per 100,000 inhabitants between 2018 and 2021. The highest discharge rate corresponds to males in the 80+ age group. There was a tendency for the hospital discharge rate to increase with the age of the diagnosed patients. Discussion and conclusion: Higher hospital discharge rate in Chile compared to global incidence. During the pandemic, the hospital discharge rate decreased, probably due to the conversion of hospital beds and low screening for skin neoplasms in health checks during this period. Males were the most affected due to a lack of photoprotection and their skin morphophysiological characteristics. This study aims to contribute to national epidemiology, invite the scientific community to conduct new studies, and encourage education on risk and protective behaviours for melanoma.
