Presence of pseudomyopic defects in young Chilean university students in 2023

Abstract

Introduction: In young patients, considering the accommodative components of their vision is key to a correct and complete optometric examination. Defects such as pseudomyopia can be confused with myopia and lead to inadequate refraction. Objective: To quantitatively study the presence of pseudomyopic defects in a population of young university students and to study in these cases the amount of near vision work and asthenopic discomfort they may experience during the week. Methodology: A sample of 18 university volunteers between the ages of 21 and 25 was assembled and underwent a study of accommodation amplitude and accommodative flexibility, in addition to a refractive study. They were asked about the hours of near vision work and asthenopic discomfort during the week. Results: The sample included cases of patients with pseudomyopia, accompanied by long hours of near vision work and manifestations of asthenopic discomfort. Participants with pseudomyopia had greater asthenopic discomfort and worse results in the accommodative study. Conclusion: This study has gathered evidence that accommodative defects and pseudomyopia can occur in young university students due to the characteristics of their accommodative system.
