Abstract

Introduction: Alcohol dependence syndrome has significant psychological and physical implications. Methodology: Observational, cross-sectional study describing the rate of hospital discharges due to alcohol dependence syndrome in the period 2018–2021 (N = 3,170), according to the databases of the Department of Health Statistics and Information. The variables studied were year, sex, age group, and average length of hospital stay. Results: The highest hospital discharge rate occurred in 2018 with 7.4, while the lowest was in 2021 with 3.8. Each year, the rate for males predominated. Regarding age groups, the highest hospital discharge rate was in the 45-64 age group (8.8), and the lowest was in the ?80 age group (1.1). The average length of hospital stay was between 17.21 and 13.17 days, with the highest in 2019 and the lowest in 2020. Each year, women had a higher average length of hospital stay. Discussion: The decrease in the hospital discharge rate between 2020 and 2021 could be associated with the pandemic context. The 45-64 age group led in each year, which could be linked to comorbidities or complications. Although the syndrome is more prevalent in men than in women, women lead in terms of average length of stay, which may be associated with biopsychosocial factors. Conclusion: The hospital discharge rate for alcohol dependence syndrome would allow for the implementation of public policies and future research to improve the health of patients with this condition.
