Abstract

This article examines the historical influence of the design discipline on population well-being, addressing emerging challenges associated with global demographic ageing from various paradigms in recent decades and proposing inclusive criteria in changing scenarios. Longevity, or the length of time someone lives, is currently a socio-politically significant issue. Advances in knowledge, health technology, and improvements in quality of life have contributed to the increase in life expectancy. This exploratory, descriptive historiographic study aims to define the concepts involved by referencing specific case studies. In the context of design, global ageing necessitates a revaluation of our preconceived notions of 'old age' and the adoption of functional inclusion criteria, ranging from formal and spatial to technological and digital. This recognises the growing number of users and guarantees the future needs of an ageing population that wishes to maintain its self-sufficiency and independence and continue to contribute to the workforce for many years to come.
