Design as a communication tool for cultural heritage

Abstract

The current recognition of the diversity of cultural identities in chile has complicated the definition of policies related to the preservation of cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible. Faced with this problem, what role should design play? If it is recognized as a tool that has traditionally been sensitive to the contexts of use, which are not necessarily restricted to mere functionality, it is reasonable to think that it can play a key role in the preservation and dissemination of traditions and values that constitute the popular memory and cultural identity of our country. Therefore, strengthening the links between design and heritage makes it possible to redefine a basic function of this discipline, such as communication, through strategies that address the local reality of each territory.
