Editorial: Design for sustainable, humane, and smart cities

Abstract

Over the past few decades, the world's population has grown rapidly, resulting in an increased urbanisation process. This has led to a large concentration of people, services, production, and consumption in cities, causing a substantial social, economic, and environmental impact and raising social inequality, traffic, and mobility issues. Governments can tackle these challenges in this scenario by utilising information and communication technologies (ICTs), renewable energy, and other innovative solutions to build smarter and more sustainable cities that prioritise their citizens while minimising their impact on the environment. An innovative city prioritising sustainability, humanity, and intelligence utilises ICT to enhance the well-being of its citizens, promotes inclusivity, and optimises its operations and services. This is all achieved while meeting current and future generations’ economic, social, environmental, and cultural needs. This special issue entitled "Design for Sustainable, Humane and Smart Cities" presents five manuscripts reflecting design research studies on shaping more sustainable cities in a broad sense and harnessing emerging digital technologies.

Author Biographies

MarcoMarco Vinicio Ferruzca Navarro , Unidad Azcapotzalco, Ciencias y Artes para el Diseño, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana

Marco V. Ferruzca is Research Professor at UAM-Azcapotzalco, where he has held various management positions. He holds a degree in Industrial Design and a PhD in Multimedia Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He is a member of the National System of Researchers of the National Council of Science and Technology of Mexico. Marco has more than 15 years of professional and research experience designing, developing, and exploiting multimedia spaces. He has published research articles in various national and international media. His research activity focuses on the design and innovation of products and services. 

Marco Aurelio Lobo Junior , Centro Universitário IESB, Brasil

Master’s in Design from the University of Brasilia, UnB, PhD student in social projects at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, FGV - Rio de Janeiro. Specialist in University Teaching – University Centre UNICEUB and bachelor’s in design from the University of Brasilia, UnB. He has 20 years of experience in innovation and design of public policies and international trade promotion. He was Project Manager at the Brazilian Agency for the Promotion of Exports and Investments, Apex-Brazil. He coordinated the 12th Brazilian Design Biennial. From 2019 to 2022, he coordinated the Observatory of Innovation for Sustainable Cities, OICS, at the Centre for Management and Strategic Studies, CGEE. He is currently the Coordinator - Professor of the Department of Design at the IESB University Centre in Brasilia - DF, Brazil.
