Resumen
Durante muchos años algunos de nosotros pensamos que la política de acción afirmativa era un dispositivo introducido en Estados Unidos de Norteamérica como respuesta a la discriminación racial. Ignorábamos totalmente que muy lejos de nuestro contexto político y cultural, la Cons titución de la La India, promulgada en 1950, ordenaba a su gobierno combatir contra la desigualdad derivada de una estructura social profusa y profundamente estratificada en múltiples castas. ¿Conocían los estadounidenses la experiencia de La India en materia de cuotas y política de reservas para tratar de poner fin a la desigualdad? La respuesta es, al parecer, negativa. Este artículo pretende mostrar cómo se aborda la cuestión desde una perspectiva constitucional, cómo han evolucionado los dos sistemas, estadounidense e hundú, y cuáles han sido los resultados de las medidas políticas para afrontar el problema.
