Abstract
The work proposes to reconsider the foundation of human rights from the modern ideas of self-preservation and self-ownership. To prove that the modern conception is radically different from the classical tendency to self-preservation, the two are compared in terms of the concepts of movement and of final purpose or final cause. To this intention, four decisive modern intellectuals are appealed: Hugo Grotius, Baruch de Spinoza, Thomas Hobbes, and John Locke.
