Results of an educational intervention focused on the prevention of pressure injuries for people with reduced mobility and their formal and informal caregivers.

Abstract

Introduction: Pressure injuries are a highly prevalent complication in bedridden older adults and wheelchair users. Patients and their caregivers, whether formal or informal, often lack the knowledge to identify and/or prevent them, which can lead to serious complications. Objective: To provide theoretical, practical, and educational tools that improve knowledge for early identification, associated risk factors, and prevention. Methodology: Educational interventions based on Jane Vella's User-Centered Design and Adult Education models were conducted with a group of 17 people on pressure injuries, how to identify them, how to prevent them, and how to act. The intervention was carried out by a group of six nursing students. After these interventions, the knowledge acquired and user satisfaction were analyzed using a questionnaire. Result: The workshop was well received, achieving an overall satisfaction rate of 94.1% in key areas such as content, quality of demonstrations, perceived usefulness, and staff attention. In addition, most of the proposed indicators were met. Discussion: The participants had basic knowledge about pressure injuries, but they were unaware of strategies to prevent and treat them properly. Conclusion: The objectives set by the nursing students throughout the project were met, as it was confirmed that the educational interventions were appropriate for teaching about pressure injury prevention.
