Abstract

Introduction: Non-traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is defined as spontaneous intraparenchymal hemorrhage secondary to underlying small vessel disease. This study aims to establish the mortality rate (MR) of non-traumatic ICH in Chile during the 2016–2024 period. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted utilizing data from the DEIS (Department of Health Statistics and Information). Variables included sex, age group, ICH subtype, geographical region, and place of death. Ethics committee approval was not required for this study. Results: The overall mortality rate for the period was 8.66 per 100,000 inhabitants. The highest MR was observed in 2016 (9.23 per 100,000 inhabitants). Males exhibited a higher MR (9.28 per 100,000 inhabitants) compared to females. The age group with the highest mortality was individuals over 80 years of age (89.24 per 100,000 inhabitants). Among regions, Ñuble demonstrated the highest MR (11.45 per 100,000 inhabitants). Discussion: The peak MR in 2016 may be attributable to suboptimal management of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs). The higher MR in males could be associated with a greater prevalence of diabetes and smoking. The elevated MR in the >80 age group might be attributed to increased frailty, poor treatment adherence, and reduced social support networks. The MR in the Ñuble region is linked to a higher prevalence of CVRFs, specific demographic factors, and limited access to specialized services. Conclusion: ICH represents a significant public health burden in Chile and globally, owing to the high mortality and disability associated with it.
