Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterised by high blood glucose levels with a significant global impact, high prevalence, mortality, and years lost due to disability. Objective: To provide an epidemiological description of the prevalence, percentage of complications, mortality, and years lost due to disability in Chile between 2002 and 2019. Methodology: The database of the Department of Health Statistics and Information of the Ministry of Health between 2002 and 2019 was used, in addition to the 2016-2017 National Health Survey published by the Ministry of Health, and the Years Lost to Disability, which were extracted from the estimates of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. Results: Morbidity and mortality between 2002 and 2019 in Chile were described and analysed, looking at changes over time, place, and characteristics of individuals such as sex, age, and years of education. Discussion: Diabetes is a chronic disease whose prevalence is increasing internationally. This is relevant given its significant impact on the morbidity and mortality of the population. In Chile, there was an increase in hospital discharges and a decrease in adjusted mortality, possibly due to public health interventions. Conclusion: Diabetes is a disease of great epidemiological relevance. At the national level, adjusted mortality has been reduced, indicating that public health measures have been beneficial. However, factors where intervention is possible and recommended have still been identified.
