Abstract

Introduction: Fatty liver disease in young people has increased significantly in recent years. The main causes are that young people lead lifestyles full of excesses, such as alcohol abuse and unhealthy eating habits. Objective: To determine the prevalence of fatty liver disease in students aged 18 to 26 at the Universidad del Desarrollo in order to highlight the current situation regarding this condition, promote a healthy lifestyle and raise awareness among the population about preventive medical check-ups. Methodology: Ultrasound scans were performed to evaluate the liver parenchyma, blood tests were carried out to measure related analytes, such as triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDLc, LDLc and transaminases, and a lifestyle survey was conducted to screen for fatty liver disease and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. Results: Out of a sample of 64 people, 14 had fatty liver, with a prevalence of 21.88%. Discussion: There was a higher percentage of fatty liver in women; however, men had a more severe form of the condition. Of all the variables evaluated in the blood, only GGT and GPT were found to be related to fatty liver. In addition, a high percentage of sedentary lifestyles, poor diet, and high alcohol consumption were observed in the population, factors that were related to the presence of fatty liver. Conclusion: A prevalence of 21.88% was observed, which may be associated with sedentary lifestyles, poor eating habits, and alcohol consumption.
