Abstract

Introduction: Social determinants are a factor of great importance in population health. Diabetes mellitus type 2 is one of the most significant chronic diseases worldwide and is closely influenced by various social determinants, both structural and intermediate, with a wealth of literature available on the subject internationally. Objective: To describe the impact of social determinants on DM2 through an updated literature review. Methodology: A review of the literature from the last 5 years on social determinants in Diabetes Mellitus 2 at the international level was conducted in order to compile and examine relevant and up-to-date information on the subject. PubMed and Lillacs databases were used. Results: The findings were organised according to category of social determinants. Among the structural social determinants, those that favour an unfavourable natural evolution stand out, such as the socio-economic difficulties present after the pandemic, the uninsured population, health systems with long waiting times for follow-up, and belonging to vulnerable groups. Among the intermediate determinants, low socioeconomic status, rurality, poor support networks, and limited access to care centres stand out. Conclusion: Recognising social determinants plays a key role in understanding and comprehensively managing diabetes. However, further studies on interventions in these areas are needed to practically evaluate their role in diabetes inequalities.
