Abstract

Introduction: Bile duct fistulas are a rare pathology that develops from an inflammatory process in the bile duct. This study describes the Hospital Admission Rate for bile duct fistula in Chile between 2019 and 2022. Methodology: Observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study, using data from the Department of Statistics and Health Research of the National Institute of Statistics. Hospital discharges due to bile duct fistula in Chile between 2019 and 2022 were analyzed according to sex and age group (n=261). The hospital discharge rate was calculated. Results: The Hospital Admission Rate for the period was 0,37 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The year with the highest Hospital Admission Rate was 2019 with 0,47, while the lowest were 2020 with 0,26 and 2021 with 0,35. The female sex had the highest rate with 0,43. The age group 65-79 years presented the highest rate with 1,24. Discussion: The study showed a decrease in the Hospital Admission Rate for bile duct fistula in 2020 and 2021, possibly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which reduced elective surgeries. The female sex had the highest rate, probably due to risk factors such as obesity and oral contraceptives. The 65-79 age group had the highest rate, which could be due to the increase in comorbidities in older patients. Conclusion: Epidemiological studies are essential to understand risk factors and guide primary and secondary health intervention measures for patients with bile duct fistulas.
