Abstract

The Chilean regulation requiring a medical prescription for hormonal contraceptives has sparked a debate about reproductive autonomy. This reflection article analyzes this requirement not as a restriction, but as a care policy. It is argued that administration without professional supervision exposes users with contraindications to clinical risks, the detection and management of which depend on professional evaluation. This regulation promotes informed autonomy, as the evaluation ensures a safe, personalized decision based on each user’s health status. Finally, it is concluded that this policy is a public health tool that safeguards well-being, promotes the rational use of medicines, and reinforces the role of midwifery in education, counseling, and prescription in sexual and reproductive health.
