Perception of LGBTIQA+ individuals regarding treatment by primary care health personnel in the Metropolitan Region in 2022

Objective: To investigate the perceptions of people aged 18 to 28 in the LGBTIQA+ community regarding the treatment they receive from healthcare personnel in primary care centres in the Metropolitan Region of Chile in 2022. Methodology: Qualitative research, case study type, conducted through semi-structured interviews with a sample of nine people from the LGBTIQA+ community. Results: Discomfort is the main perception of the group when entering a healthcare facility. In addition, there is a lack of training for healthcare personnel in dealing with people from the LGBTIQA+ community on issues of mental and physical health, among others. Furthermore, it is reported that, in general, the person's social name and/or pronouns are not asked for or respected in healthcare settings. Along with this, the participants propose areas for improvement in healthcare for the LGBTIQA+ community, basing healthcare on respect and incorporating workshops on the use of pronouns, sexual diversity, how to avoid discrimination, among others. Discussion: The study's findings are consistent with the literature, which shows evidence of discrimination and discomfort when being treated by healthcare personnel, with participants receiving rude and disrespectful treatment from healthcare personnel.
